Set
deep in the Pennines, Weardale's only riches were its lead mines, church
and landowner the only beneficiaries. Non-conformist convictions grew
strong in these isolated communities. The first Methodist preacher came
in 1748; later, a chapel was built at Ireshopeburn. Here the Watsons
left their mark. |
